About the Course
Trained security personnel, specifically door supervisors holding an SIA licence, are essential for any business selling alcohol, ranging from small pubs to large nightclubs, retailers, cafés, restaurants, hotels, and sports facilities.
Starting October 2021, door supervisors are mandated to undergo top-up training before renewing their licences. Hence, this Level 2 Award for Door Supervisors in the Private Security Industry (Top Up) course targets individuals currently possessing an SIA licence for door supervision, ensuring they meet the updated qualification standards.
Aligned with the relevant SIA specifications and endorsed by Skills for Security and the SIA, this course covers essential topics such as:
- Understanding responses to terror threats and the role of security operatives during such incidents.
- Proficiency in utilizing equipment relevant to door supervision.
- Protocol during global or critical incidents.
- Comprehension of physical interventions and the associated implications and risks.
Learners are required to engage in mandatory self-study activities prior to the course commencement, as it’s an integral component of the qualification. Before the course begins, participants must complete the following distance learning tasks:
- Self-study on the Principles of Using Equipment as a Door Supervisor in the Private Security Industry (2 hours).
- Self-study on the Principles of Terror Threat Awareness in the Private Security Industry (2 hours).

Course Curriculum
The course comprises three essential units:
Unit 1: Principles of Recognising Terror Threats in the Private Security Industry
- Understanding various terror threats and the security operative’s role during such situations.
- Identifying common methods of terror attacks.
- Recognising appropriate actions to take when faced with a terror threat.
- Identifying procedures for handling suspicious items.
- Recognising behaviours indicative of suspicious activity.
- Understanding proper responses to suspicious behaviour.
Unit 2: Principles of Utilising Equipment as a Door Supervisor in the Private Security Industry
- Familiarising with government guidelines concerning global or critical incidents.
- Identifying various types of personal protective equipment relevant to door supervisor roles.
- Understanding the purpose of utilising body-worn cameras (BWC).
- Mastering effective communication techniques using relevant equipment.
- Practicing the efficient use of communication devices.
- Understanding appropriate actions to take during global or critical incidents.
Unit 3: Application of Physical Intervention Skills in the Private Security Industry
- Understanding the use of physical interventions and their consequences.
- Recognising the risks associated with physical intervention.
- Learning methods to mitigate risks related to physical intervention.
- Demonstrating proficiency in using physical skills for self-defense and protection of others.
- Employing non-pain compliant standing, holding, and escorting techniques effectively.
To enroll in the course, all participants must be 18 years of age or older.
As per SIA regulations, training centres are obligated to verify that each learner possesses adequate qualifications in First Aid or Emergency First Aid. Therefore, prospective candidates must demonstrate possession of a current and valid First Aid or Emergency First Aid certificate that meets the standards outlined in the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.
The First Aid or Emergency First Aid certification must remain valid for a minimum of 12 months from the course commencement date.
Prior to commencing the SIA Door Supervisor training, you are required to furnish Heart & Soul Community Training with your valid First Aid or Emergency First Aid certificate.
In the event that you do not possess a valid First Aid or Emergency First Aid certificate, we can provide you with an Emergency First Aid Training Course.
To successfully complete the SIA Door Supervisor Top Up course, you will need to undergo three multiple-choice question examinations and two practical assessments:
For Unit 1 – Principles of Terror Threat Awareness in the Private Security Industry, you will be required to respond to 10 multiple-choice examination questions within a duration of 20 minutes. The passing score is set at 70%.
For Unit 2 – Principles of Using Equipment as a Door Supervisor in the Private Security Industry, you will need to answer 5 multiple-choice examination questions in 10 minutes. The passing mark is also 70%.
The practical assessment involves observing the use of communication devices, with a pass mark of 100%.
For Unit 3 – Application of Physical Intervention Skills in the Private Security Industry, you will be expected to tackle 30 multiple-choice examination questions within 45 minutes. The passing score for this unit is 80%.
Additionally, there will be a practical assessment where each learner’s performance of every technique will be observed, documented using an observation sheet. A Q/A session will also be conducted to address critical areas of physical intervention knowledge.
Our policy ensures that there is no fee for retaking the exam if you do not pass on your initial attempt – a principle we refer to as “NO PASS – NO RETAKE FEE.” You are entitled to two retakes without any additional charge. With a pass rate exceeding 95%, you can trust in our commitment to your success.
Exam results will be made available on the same day.
